KANSAS CITY – Mets right-handed reliever Dedniel Núñez will undergo Tommy John surgery next week, manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed on Saturday.
“We wish him the best, and we’ll be praying for him,” Mendoza said.
Núñez appeared in 10 games for the Mets this season, compiling a 4.66 ERA in 9 2/3 innings and recording three holds. He allowed five runs on six hits and six walks with 11 strikeouts.
Núñez previously had Tommy John surgery in 2021.
“He worked extremely hard and came into Spring Training healthy,” Mendoza said. “You feel for the guy. He gave it a try.”
Núñez had struggled with a sprained right elbow. He was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on May 4 but was optioned back on May 17 after struggling with his control.
Núñez had recently sought multiple opinions to determine if the surgery would be necessary.
In 2024, Núñez had a 2.31 ERA with a 0.91 WHIP and 48 strikeouts in 35 innings.
